Pearls are a beautiful pure white, classic piece of jewellery. Many great ladies, such as queens and heads of state, have worn pearls to many different occasions, both formal and casual. Pairing a pearl necklace with a little black dress is one of the most stylish outfits that a woman can wear.
Pearls have also been mentioned in classic writings, by authors such as William Shakespeare and Robert Frost. Whether it is a pearl of wisdom, or a pearl jewel, both represent classic style and elegance.
Natural pearls are formed when an irritant, such as sand or dirt, get into the shell of an oyster. The oyster then tries to protect itself and covers the irritant with a substance called nacre (mother of pearl), which deposits a hard shell around it, and thus a pearl is created.
Pearls are graded from A to AAA, with triple-A being the finest and the most valuable. The shape of the pearl, the way it reflects light, where it comes from, and the colour of the pearl, are also important factors that will affect the value of a pearl.
The most popular types of pearl jewellery are earrings, and necklaces. Pearl earrings usually come as studs; they can be mounted on gold or silver studs. Pearl necklaces are made in either a single strand, or many strands at different lengths, from collar which measures fourteen inches, to rope which is thirty six inches. Either of these make great, if rather expensive, gifts.
If you want your accessory to be elegant yet simple, classic and timeless, choose the natural beauty of pearl jewellery.
